Stride length

Stride length is estimated from height — if your fitness tracker measures it directly, that number will be more precise.

How stride length is estimated

Stride length correlates fairly well with height, so we use a standard ratio to estimate it — your actual stride can vary a little based on leg length and walking style.

Why 10,000 steps became the benchmark

It originated from a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign, not a specific research finding — but it's roughly 7-8km for most people and a reasonable, achievable daily activity target.

Steps vs. structured exercise

Daily steps are a great measure of overall activity, but they're a complement to structured training, not necessarily a replacement for it.

The formula

# Stride length
Stride length(m) = height(cm) × 0.414 / 100

# Distance
Distance(km) = (steps × stride length) / 1000

# Time (at ~5km/h walking pace)
Time(min) = distance(km) / 5 × 60

# Calories
Calories ≈ steps × 0.0005 × weight(kg)

Common questions

It's a population-average ratio — actual stride length varies with leg length, walking speed and individual gait, so treat this as a solid estimate rather than an exact measurement.

Not precisely — running stride length is typically longer than walking stride length, so distance would be underestimated. This calculator assumes a walking pace.

Trackers with GPS measure distance directly rather than estimating from stride length, so they're generally more accurate — this calculator is a solid estimate if you don't have one.
