These formulas predate modern body composition science — they estimate a healthy weight range, not an optimal physique.

Why three different formulas?

Each formula was developed independently, decades apart, using different populations — comparing all three gives a range rather than relying on a single estimate that might not fit you well.

What these formulas miss

None of them account for muscle mass, frame size or body composition — a heavily muscled athlete will read as 'overweight' by these formulas despite low body fat.

How to use this result

Treat the average as a rough anchor point, not a strict target — body fat percentage and how you look and feel are generally more useful day-to-day guides.

The formulas

# Hamwi (1964)
Men:   48.0kg + 2.7kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 45.5kg + 2.2kg per inch over 5ft

# Devine (1974)
Men:   50.0kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft

# Robinson (1983)
Men:   52.0kg + 1.9kg per inch over 5ft
Women: 49.0kg + 1.7kg per inch over 5ft

All three were originally developed for medical dosing reference, not fitness goals — they're a rough starting anchor at best.

Common questions

None is definitively 'most accurate' — they were developed for different original purposes. The average of all three is a reasonable general estimate.

Not necessarily. These formulas don't account for muscle mass, bone structure or body composition, so athletes and muscular individuals commonly fall outside these ranges.

They have similar limitations to BMI — both are population-level formulas, not personalised assessments. Body fat percentage is generally a more useful individual measure.
